Today’s article is the 1st part of the series of the Evolution of the Police Nurse as discussed with permission by Police Senior Inspector MAGILAS S SALVACION RN, MAN, Nursing Service Division, PNP Health Service:
Under Section 28, Article VI of Republic Act 9173 “Philippine Nursing Law of 2002”, the scope of nursing practice in our country was redefined as follows:
“A person shall be deemed to be practicing nursing within the meaning of this Act when he/she singly or in collaboration with another, initiates and performs nursing services to individuals, families and communities in any health care setting…”(1)
As one of the many different health care settings and fields of the professional nursing in our country, the Nursing Service Division personnel who collaboratively initiates and performs nursing services to the Philippine National Police (PNP) community has one of the most colorful, dramatic and vibrant history. It can be noticed today, however, that most but not all nursing societies and people in general have failed to recognize this group of nurses who have a special role in our community, especially in the PNP, which has and almost always been misconstrued as part of the Nurse Corps of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. It is safe to say that any member of the Nursing Service Division, at one point of their career, have experience this scenario. It is either we will be recognized as policeman or policewoman only and not as a nurse or a military nurse. It is with all good intention to reexamine why this is so. There is a probability that the reason for this phenomenon is the direct link between the Nurse Corps and Nursing Service as to AFP and PNP. In line with this thought, here are some significant facts which led to the evolution of the Police Nurse…… To be continue..
